Spring Festival 09
Austria’s number one festival

DMC’s Sally McLintock was our girl down the front…

“This year was the ninth year that ‘Spring’ in Graz, Austria took place. I had never been to the festival before, but this year I decided to take the plunge . Daniela, the organiser of the festival is an absolute star. How she manages to organise all of this baffled me. A four day festival spanning over 17 venues round Graz – I find it hard organising the 32 nation DMC World Finals competition in one venue, let alone 17. The flight out of Stansted was crammed with loads of the artists who were performing over the weekend. How to get the party started right! Daniella’s choice of hotel for the Brit contingent was spot on, not that we stuck around long as Goldie was down the  road spinning, so it was a case of key in the door, bag thrown in and back in the lift. Friday night (and also Saturday) had the London based club night ‘Urban Nerds’ hosting nights – definite must see’s. They took their full crew out for this amazing two day party and also a film crew to catch their every move. But first off it was back to Goldie at PPC where Wolverhampton’s finest was performing, then off to see Urban Nerd’s Illaman on stage who absolutely smashed it. Friday rolled on. In a cab and over to The Ska Club to catch the Urban Nerds in full effect – a massive line up including Dusty Lungs, Heny G, Sinden, Slimzee, Tubby, Drama and Daddy Nature. UK in the house and how the Austrians loved it. Free drinks didn’t help my head Saturday morning – but hey, who cares. That’s not to mention the amount of DJs and live acts who we partied with on our floor after one of the best ever ‘after parties’ where I have never laughed and danced so much. So Saturday was indeed hazy to begin with. Great day though, bumped into DMC UK Champion 2007 JFB and beatbox extraordinaire Beardyman who was playing at Postgarage later that night. Friday night, so many people come up to me bigging up the ‘Rave In A Cave’, otherwise known as Dom Im Berg we just had to venture there for Kruder & Dorfmeister – this is probably the best club I have been to. The setting is out of this world. Up a mountain and into a cave, a half mile walk up in the most surreal clubland entrance ever – and then wow! This huge hollow space where the sound from the DJs was just oh my god. A must see festival for everyone. We then headed on down to The Ska Club where Ordio Kid, the Tomb Club, A1 Bassline, Zinc, Rattus Rattus & Klose One, Illaman, Beny Page and Zero G were smashing it. That was until I dropped a bottle of Vodka on my foot which went everywhere. Oh well, who needs Christian Louboutin heels. Summing up, so many artists – so little time. I unfortunately missed JFB and Beardyman’s set which was sick I was told, Mr Oizo, Diplo, Beat Junkies, DMC Champ DJ Beware, The Whip, London Elektricity, LTJ Bukem, Jazznova, Mala the list goes on…Roll on Spring Ten. Massive thanks to the Spring Festival team and Daniela, who were all amazing to me. Watch out for Urban Nerds documentary of the festival on youtube and we will see you in Graz next year…
