Jordan Suckley

Radio 1’s new trance-master presenter

Welcome to DMCWORLD young man. What a future you have ahead of you. Your first break in the music industry as such, was winning a DJ competition for a set at Nation in Liverpool when you were 18. Was your original plan to become a DJ, a producer or both when you were growing up?

When I first started, I was mixing on turntables squeezed onto a wallpaper-pasting table in my bedroom. I was one of the people who tried to run before they could walk, as I started learning to scratch and use FX before I could beat match properly as it was more fun! I had no intension of learning to produce at all, until I was signed to an agency and they advised me it would be a necessary thing for me to do to progress to the next step in my career, so in early 2009 I began the production journey.”

How did you get into EDM in the first place? What were the early clubs you were jumping around in?

I used to buy all of the Cream and Gatecrasher CDs before I was old enough to hit the clubs, and after watching Kevin and Perry (the movie) I thought, that is it! As soon as I got a fake ID, I was out all of the time, but my first real clubbing experience was Goodgreef at Ascension in Manchester, with Eddie Halliwell. This gave me the Tech Trance/Techno bug. I went to University in Swansea where they have an amazing club called Escape. This is where I really began my clubbing days. Every week they had big headliners such as Paul Van Dyk, Eddie Halliwell and Judge Jules.”

Following the set at Nation, you started to appear at some of the Gatecrasher and Godskitchen tour nights until you received a phone call from the PFA/Goodgreef crew asking you to go in for a meeting. What did you honestly think the meeting was all about?

“Haha, yeah, I was unsure what the meeting was about at first, it seemed like everyone else knew apart from me. As it turns out that changed my life, as shortly after I became a full time DJ and the gigs came flooding in”

How would you say your sound has changed over the years, if at all…

Years ago, when I started, I played Hard House/Hard Trance, when it was good, but I always played Trance as well. I then moved onto Tech Trance and Funky Techno, during the ‘Bosh’ era. Now I am a Trance DJ that plays right across the board, depending on the specific event and set times!”

You have just been confirmed as one of the monthly residents on Radio 1, taking the prized 4th Thursday of the month slot – how did all of this happen?

“They contacted my management asking for a pilot in July last year (2011), so it was a while ago. I then got the phone call, three weeks before it was announced. I was dying to tell everyone that Radio 1 had taken me on, but had to keep it to myself”

Who was the first person you told this incredible news?

“My Mother.”

What can we expect from your show?

I will be covering all of the variations that you expect to hear at a Trance event these days. That is everything from warm up, chunky, progressive, uplifting and tech as well. I want it to be a musical journey!”

You have just returned from Argentina – what was that like!?!

Argentina was absolutely incredible! I can’t put it in to words how amazing the whole experience was! I am still sad now that I am not there, although I am hoping to be back before the year is out!”

Who would you say are your DJ heroes?

I have loads of DJs who I respect massively, for different reasons, such as James Zabiela, Eddie Halliwell, Sander Van Doorn, Simon Patterson, John O’Callaghan and many others!

How would you say the crowds around the world differ?

“In some countries the crowds are more educated on the fresh music that has just been released, but in others you have to play a few more ‘well known’ tracks, to accommodate for the different crowds.”

You have been busy in the studio of late, what are the next releases/remixes coming our way?

“Binary Finary & Jordan Suckley – It gets me (Original mix)

Jordan Suckley – Spooked (Original and Tech mix)

Jordan Suckley – Prisoner (Original and Thomas Datt remix)

Tydi ft Audrey Gallagher – You walk away (Jordan Suckley remix)

I also have two big collaborations on the way and a new EP!”

Tell us about your studio set up…

I use a 27inch iMac, Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 Soundcard, Mackie Speakers, MIDI keyboard and Logic. I prefer to only use a few synths, so I know them inside out. I use Sylenth, Massive, ES2 and sometimes Zebra.”

What is the finest record you have ever played to a dancefloor?

Simon Patterson – ‘US’ (Original mix)

A mighty Summer looking, a return to the Electricity Fesival in Poland, a debut at Dance Island in Hawaii, Creamfields and Global Gathering bookings. What big events are you most looking forward to this year?

“My diary has exploded! I have so many great events coming up! I am playing 7 or 8 different festivals and am also off to loads of different countries. It is my busiest year so far! I think Creamfields and Global are high up on my list for the ones I am looking forward to the most!

What are the plans for Ibiza this summer?

I will be over for the Goodgreef Trance week in September and also have some other bits, which will be announced soon! I will be traveling to Zante in Greece to DJ in-between my Ibiza visits this year! Amazing!
