Teddy’s Philly Sound

Betcha loving this piece of filtered house Dutch bliss

Welcome to DMCWORLD towers, you are currently riding high in the world famous Buzz Chart with your filterdisco gem ‘Betcha’ – a wondrous piece of summer house music. Talk us through the history of the tune…

“Thanks Dan. ‘Betcha’ is actually one of the first projects we started on as ‘Teddy’s Philly Sound’ about one year ago. But after making a rough demo of the track it kind of fell out of the picture as we continued with other productions. But we always knew it had something catchy and original to it. So a few months back we picked it up again, totally rearranged it and finished the track as it is now. We are quite excited by the result and especially by the way the track is doing in the DMC Buzz Chart!”

DMC are big fans of J Paul Getto, anyone who on their Facebook site claims they “love staring at your girls titties” is cool with us. Why did you choose these cool producers to rework your tune…

“We’ve always been in love with J Paul Getto’s remixes and original productions and we play a lot of them in our sets. A few months ago we contacted J Paul Getto via Soundcloud to ask them if they were interested in making a remix of Betcha, which was unsigned at the time. They liked the track so much that they asked us if they could sign it at their label Fogbank Recordings and the rest is history…”

When you think of The Netherlands and dance music you immediately think of all of the trance millionaires out there, it’s a refreshing change to have some proper house music come out of your country. How did this production journey begin for you, who were the artists that got you hooked on house music in the first place?

“We both started producing at a young age with Dutch house producers like Fedde Le Grand and Erick E as an inspiration. I also listened to a lot of Hed Kandi and Ministry Of Sound compilations, which really made my love for house grow. After high school we both went to art school to study music production. This is where our collaboration started. We made all kinds of dance music over the years and in this time of producing all kinds of genres we found out that we were both mostly drawn to funky and disco house. And that is how Teddy’s Philly Sound was born.”

What was the record that changed your life?

“It is hard to pick just one record, but if I must choose I think I’ll go for Daft Punk – One More Time. This was the first sample based house I heard and really liked as a kid, and was one of the reasons I started with producing at the time…”

What is your current top 10 you are spinning?

“Next to a lot of our own productions these are the songs we enjoy playing the most at the moment…”

DJ Dan – Reckless Gurl
Matt Soda & Aaron Perez – Falling Apart
Todd Terry & Michael Moog – Disco (Tee’s Disco 500 Mix)
Bass Kleph & Filthy Rich – Be Right There
Will Monotone – Dem Mai Hoes
J Paul Getto – She Went Left
Digitalism – Encore (Spiller & 2 Guys In Venice Remix)
EC Twins – Trapped In Miami
Joss Moog – That’s What U R
Alec Carlsson – Paris Fried Chicken (J Paul Getto Remix)

Who are the big producers from around the world you are giving high fives to at the moment?

“It’s hard to pick just a few, but we get much inspiration from producers like DJ Dan, DJ Mes, Treasure Fingers and of course J Paul Getto.”

Your name gives respect to one of America’s finest ever musical cities, responsible for soul, gospel, classical and house music legends. Dead or alive – which 5 Philadelphia musicians/DJs do you invite around for dinner?

“I think I’d pick Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, founders of the world famous Philadelphia International Records label next to them on the dinner table would be Loleatta Holloway, the wonderfull Soul/Disco singer who has been sampled in the house scene countless times. For the table jokes I would invite all around ‘West Philly’ entertainer Will Smith, and last but not least Teddy Pendergrass, on which we owe the first part of our name!”

The Filtered House sound was huge a decade ago, slowly but surely this sound is filling our speakers once again, where did it go?!?!?

“I’m afraid that we Dutch have a big part in that with acts like Afrojack and Sidney Samson taking the big stage with their high pitched bleeps, pushing the sampled house in a corner a bit. But I think there is still much love for the kind of house we make by the generation that remembers Filtered House when it was at his peak, and for the younger generation of clubbers it’s a sound that they haven’t heard yet – and for them it’s kind of a refreshing break from all the mainstream pop house. So I think the sampled/filtered sound could be on a uprising again!”

What has been your anthem of the summer?

“My anthem for the summer is surprisingly enough a track that came out last winter, Inspector Norse by Todd Terje. I rediscovered it when the hilarious videoclip came out a month ago. This happy synthy disco track puts me in a good mood every time I put it on.”

Outside of house music, what other artists are you listening to at the moment?

“I’ve been listening to a lot of Zero 7 lately, as well as the Belgian singer Selah Sue.”

Who brings what to the studio, in other words who is good at what?

“I think we compliment each other very well in the studio. I’m good at the musical part and the arrangement of a track while Boye is on his best with the sound, mix and details of a production. But what works best about our collaboration is that when one of us is uninspired or on a dead end with a track the other always finds a way to bring the production to a higher level.”

Where have been some of the great club shows of 2012 for you?

“The biggest gig we played this year was the Dutch Festival ‘Free Festival’ next to names like Shapeshifters and Gregor Salto. Also we played a couple of clubs as a live act with live saxophone, guitar and percussion. To perform more like a band other than just as two DJs playing their tracks we try to give a little more entertainment to our performances, because we believe this could be a way to stand out in the mass of house DJ’s.”

And finally, what is coming next from you studio wise…

“We recently did remixes for Dan McKie and Dutch producer Igor Valente which will be out soon. We just finished a new original track with vocals by Miss Bunty, know for her releases on labels like Hed Kandi and Defected. So we are very excited about this track and it will be coming your way pretty quick!”
