Floorman is DJ-producer Tony Global, who landed on his feet with a couple of US TV ads a few years back and, after running into Australian singer Holy Backler of Secret Stealth, was prodded to concoct a whole album featuring her distinctive soulful tones. Originally the Floorman project would have featured other guest singers but there was no need. Joined by Secret Stealth/Crazy P keyboardist Jim Baron, they came up with the songs on an album which has sunk its nails into the gonads after the first track. They say they were influenced by Chic and that’s true. Not the ‘Le Freak’ symphonic disco starburst though, more the under-rated later stuff: clipped, economical but shot with lush soul and melody. Tracks like ‘Do It’ and some sublime ballads create a delicious, sexy mood, while ‘Over And Over’ appears to stroke the bassline from Thelma Houston’s ‘You Used To Hold Me’ to create a smooth, glacial kind of beauty. Going against the grain of over-production, it’s simply a toe-tingling summer treat with much to splash about in.
