Boozoo Bajou – 4 – (Apollo)

The press release for Peter Heider and Florian Seyberth’s newest record as Boozoo Bajou proclaims it to be ‘without question the record of their career’. It’s a bold statement – but it’s also right, for after a number of listens everything falls beautifully into place. First impressions can be so misleading, because there is so much more to this record than initially meets the ear – some wonderful subtleties of sound, melody and rhythm that can drift on the wind. Sometimes the listener might well feel they’ve been cut adrift in an American prairie with only the starry night for company, with some dry, dusty guitar riffs and out of body trumpets making fractured riffs and melodic plays. Because of that the opening ‘Jan Mayen’ sounds akin to the music a TV drama like ‘Homeland’ might use, while ‘Hirta’ makes more of a play for dub music. Disjointed fragments link up really well to the airy backdrop in ‘Tiefdruck-Hochdruck’, while the gorgeous ‘Der Kran’ has a Mediterranean feel. A treat for the small hours
