Dan Bodan is a lot softer than your average DFA act – which he openly admits in the title of this album! It’s a good thing where DFA are concerned, though, because it means the label is continuing with its ability to surprise and invent. At times the singer-songwriter even sounds like he is trying to add to the Great American Songbook on ‘For Heaven’s Sake’ (Let’s Fall In Love)’, while elsewhere he moves towards a sort of heat soaked ‘70s West Coast sound. For much of his album Bodan does a nice line in confidential electro pop, though there are hints of disquiet on the less than settled ‘Jaws Of Life’, where he proclaims in a quiet voice that “I don’t trust you anymore”, evoking early Junior Boys in the process. While not wholly successful, Bodan’s approach is intriguing and revealing.
