Friendly Fires are the latest buzz band, but with good reason. Their debut album is full of keen examples of songwriting, but pays a clear homage to the disco, with both coming together in thrilling effect on tracks such as ‘Jump In The Pool’ and ‘On Board’, with its catchy falsetto hook. It’s a big, widescreen sound they make but is rarely overproduced, so that their subtleties come through as well – and ‘Strobe’ proves to be a more reflective, understated song. The heady harmonies and carnival beats of ‘Jump In The Pool’ win through though, powering some wonderfully affirmative songs. If you enjoyed the Foals debut six months back, this will be an ideal compliment.
