Gang Colours – ‘The Keychain Collection’ – (Brownswood)

Gang Colours - The Keychain CollectionGilles Peterson has unearthed another gem for his Brownswood label in the shape of Gang Colours, aka Southampton producer Will Ozanne. His first album, ‘The Keychain Collection’, is a strikingly intimate piece of work that covers a wide emotional range. Initially it looks set to be inward facing, with slow, deeply felt musings that err on the dark side with the involvement of a sombre piano. The addition of some simple but keenly felt vocals keeps the essentially human element, though, and in songs like ‘Forgive Me’ are deeply affecting. Yet out of the darkness comes brilliant light, with ‘Botley In Bloom’ and ‘Fancy Restaurant’ two of the finest pieces of productions you could hope to hear, the former bringing to mind the best work of Jamie xx. Ozanne has his own voice, though, and by retreating into his shell for much of this album he explores his inner thoughts with elegance and resolve, not to mention consistently inventive beats and textures. An outstanding piece of work.
