John Foxx is really showing off his versatility this year. Having released a superb electro album with The Maths he turns his attention to more relaxed matters, teaming up with Soft Machine’s ‘Theo Travis’ for a beatless album of ambient beauty. Travis plays flute over Foxx’s softly voiced sound landscapes, but if that sounds like a recipe for background music there is always enough going on to prevent that. Foxx has a way of evoking night time city sounds that work together, while Travis has a way of playing the flute without making it sound like a cheesy restaurant soundtrack. As a result the combination plays out to good effect, relaxing but with enough of an edge to keep the listener involved.
