LEMON JELLY
’64 – ’95
XL RECORDINGS

With Lemon Jelly, you never quite know what you’re going to get.  They’re one of those groups who rely on those most unlikely combinations – an ear for a good tune, a sense of humour and sheer talent –  which saw them quickly transform from quiet newcomers few had heard of to a (still quiet) super group that everyone wanted to name check within a few years.  And they made wonderful music about things like ducks and space walking along the way.  So, it’s with some anticipation that the duo’s third full length release is greeted.  Tracks like the “The Shouty Track” and “Stay With You” have provided an inkling of the diversity on offer.  Not just blissed out pop for lazy summer days, although that’s here too.  Lemon Jelly are in full-on dance mode for “’64 – ’95”, a coy reference to the year of release for each sample they’ve utilised.  Taking these disparate samples, they weave a tapestry of delights that’s funky, laidback, full-on, spooky, jazzy and, yes, quirky, in differing measures.  And the special guest vocalist will blow you away. The album’s not perfect, but then it’s probably not meant to be.  This is Lemon Jelly, roughed up, with the occasional jagged edge, adding another essential recording to their name.
