Not electronic or dance music as such, but the second album from Dev Hynes is well worth getting to know. It’s a bit more upfront than the winning vulnerability of his folksy debut ‘Falling Off The Lavender Bridge’, but some cleverly thought out lyrics, instrumentation and melodies mean there’s plenty to latch on to. Many of the bittersweet songs are shot through with poignant moments, though when he cuts loose in the funkier ‘Marlene’, you can’t help feeling there might be an inner disco monster waiting for the chance to stretch its legs. ‘There’s Nothing Underwater’ is especially good, while ‘Sweetheart’ grows into an emotive orchestral number. Worth seeking out if you like your songs written a little off the beaten track.
