LORD HURON – LONESOME DREAMS – IAMSOUND

It’s not often that DMC endorse albums that don’t fit an electronic or rhythmic blueprint, but Lord Huron’s debut album is one of those times. Lord Huron is the moniker for Ben Schneider, of Michigan, and the cover picture of a horse on a prairie under the light of a crescent moon offers a clue to what the overall sound might be. As it turns out, this is indeed blissful open air music that proves perfect for raising the January spirits, with songs that owe a little to the influence of Simon & Garfunkel that get thrown wide open by the appealing production. This is where the electronics do come in occasionally, with a sound that works really well on headphones and at high volume, as Schneider’s multi layered vocals work wonders. The more you listen, the more you find – details of folk, background electronic touches and rhythms that keep out of genre constraints – and all go with songs that are finely crafted and beautifully realised. Well worth seeking out to keep the spirits high.
