ELEMENTS OF LIGHT – PANTHA DU PRINCE & THE BELL LABORATORY – ROUGH TRADE

Pantha Du Price has already shown an aptitude for using bells in his music, and on his debut LP ‘Black Noise’ he used field recordings of Alpine bells to blend in seamlessly with his own hypnotic techno. Here he goes a step further, enlisting a number of ‘campanologists’ (bell players to you and me!) to play live, exploring the potential of closed melodic loops and longer overtones that the bell sounds all make. The results are mesmeric, and on opening track ‘Wave’ he builds up the tension through holding the bass back for all of four minutes to the start of ‘Particle’, where it sneaks in right at the lowest edge of the spectrum. This is an album that has an incredibly broad sonic range, so is best heard on a system that can support high treble and low bass. Then it will reveal its seamless workings from start to finish, with the longer tracks ‘Particle’ and ‘Sonic Split’ – both comfortably over 10 minutes in length – casting something of a spell. A wonderful piece of work.
