The Defected ‘House Masters’ series has been an invaluable way of examining some of the best vocal and deep house producers, and often arrives at a figure who hasn’t had the full recognition they deserve. Miguel Migs could arguably be classed in that category, a purveyor of sultry West Coast house that has been notable for its consistently high quality. Migs’ production, with live instrumentation to the fore, is usually deep but it has a warmth that makes it immediately appealing – and his choice of vocalists is usually spot on. Lisa Shaw is the regular collaborator, and brings real soul to ‘Honey’ and ‘Cherry’, while among the most successful Migs cuts are ‘Tonight’, ‘Surrender’ and ‘Petalpushing’. With inclusions from his NRK and Naked Music catalogues, this makes Migs’ collection pretty much unmissable for fans of soulful house, bringing a burst of warm sunshine with it.
