The New York – Latin America interface is a good one when it comes to making music of character and a little grit, and so it proves in this vibrant third album from Ocote Soul Sounds. The ‘Sounds’ are Quesada and Martin Perna, and they bring a variety of musical influences and styles to the table. They sound best, though, when the saxophone is up in the mix, so plaudits go to the rasping Josh Levy, who brings a nice edge to Pan, Chamba Y Techo – easily the pick of the tracks here, with its uplifting chorus. Elsewhere the vocals of Brazilian Tita Lima make a languid impression on Vendende Saude E Fe, though the psychedelic guitar solo on the otherwise enjoyable ‘Return Of The Freak’ is a bit much. That said, this is an enjoyable and funky summer album.
