GU37: Bangkok Mixed By James Lavelle
Global Underground

James Lavelle’s third release under the Global Underground umbrella is probably his most varied yet – and that’s obvious even after four tracks of the first mix, in which time he’s delivered his own symphonic UNKLE cut ‘Trouble In Paradise’, Doves’ ‘Jetstream’ and Animal Collective’s ‘Summertime Clothes’. From there the tension falls back quite a bit, and good though Nathan Fake and James Holden are it takes a little while to regroup before UNKLE mixes of Layo & Bushwacka and The Big Pink really start to liven things up. CD2 goes deep with Dubfire mixes of System 7 and the outstanding take on Radio Slave’s ‘Grindhouse’, then really cuts loose with strong house numbers from Fergie, King Unique and Gavin Herlihy. There’s rarely a dull moment in Lavelle’s mixing, and a feeling that he is a naturally adventurous DJ in his track selections and mixing. As a result these two mixes have a freshness a lot of others are lacking.
