At first this album gives the impression of a step back in time to 1990s trip hop, but it’s actually much more than that. A refreshingly short listen at forty minutes, Alex Brovelli and Virgine Krupa treat us to minimalist keyboard textures, nocturnal torch songs and yearning vocals from Krupa, nowhere more so than on The Way We Have Chosen. Confabulation unwinds slowly but uneasily, retaining the edgy darkness that runs through the album, to which The Last provides a frenetic climax. It’s all slightly derivative, but a decent late night listen nonetheless.
