Prins Thomas has been a very busy man of late. Not content with last year’s triple header ‘Goulash’ compilation, he returns with a double artist album from the ambient side, channelling the spirit of early 90s electronica. Going right back to first principles, Thomas leaves the track titles with single letters only, and does away with drum beats completely for the whole of part one. There are still rhythms, mind, and ‘C’ plays around with some syncopated synthesizer cells in a way that recalls Philip Glass. Part two remains ambient but adds some of the trademark, four to the floor ‘cosmic disco’ beats we might associate with him – and, in the case of the closing ‘H’, a lovely buzz to the bass line. There is nothing startlingly new here – but does there need to be? It’s quality music, pure and simple – and once you’ve played part one to the accompaniment of the sunrise you’ll understand what it’s all about.
