Schneider TM – aka Dirk Dresselhaus – is very imaginative when it comes to exploring sound patterns, and it was always going to be the case that his ‘guitar album’ would not be conventional. This is after all a man whose last record took the sounds of a building site and made them into music! And so it is that Guitar Sounds, in its five extended tracks, only really has one that comes close to conventional guitar playing. This is the improvisatory ‘Teilhard’, which becomes more animated as it progresses to include some weird wah-wah effects in the middle. Elsewhere ‘First Of May’ has some basic but highly effective sounds and improvisations, while the outer tracks, ‘Landslide’ and ‘Überzahl’, make great use of distortion and spatial sound effects that work very well on headphones. As, indeed, does the whole album.
