The 2 Bears – The Night Is Young Remixed – (Southern Fried Records)

Remix albums are a rarer breed these days, but this enjoyable and varied collection of 2 Bears rerubs shows there is plenty of life in the old dog yet. The concept works because they present ‘The Night Is Young’ in the same order as the album, only with a wide variety of studio talent behind the remixes. That means we get to enjoy everything from the busy Fracture’s Astrophonica dub of ‘Money Man’, featuring Stylo G, to the piano-led house of Emmanuel Satie’s take on ‘Get Out’, and the classy contributions from Martin Buttrich (a relatively minimal go at ‘Run Run Run’ with wobbly bassline) and Henrik Schwarz, who lifts ‘My Queen to a higher level. The insistent bleeps and repetitive vocals of Naum Gabo’s remix of ‘Unbuild It’ are a bit much, but the Seahawks Deep Love for All Mankind remix of ‘Mary Mary’ is a really nice extended dive into deeper waters. Something for everything here, and the free spirit of The 2 Bears’ original work is fully kept alive.
