When the sound systems and the never-ending highs were coming together during the late 80‘s and early 90‘s, lost in a faceless muddy field with a friendly mass of similar smiley’d faces, weighty phrases like “era defining”, “timeless”, and ”classics” weren’t necessarily at the forefront of most peoples minds. Sure, there were a few artists during this time with the creative energy to score a hit or three off the back of the popularity of the raves they were busy sound tracking every weekend, but most never went beyond that (and probably never wanted to). Step forward The Prodigy, the era’s one and only dance super-group. They captured the sheer attitude and enthusiasm of the era in their music, and were canny enough to be able to package it to a wider market without any compromise whatsoever – there’s not many who can do that. These two re-packages – complete with bonus material – are a welcome and timely reminder of why everybody bought into The Prodigy world (and still do – their recent tour was amazing) – raucous, edgy, hyper-active electronic music that still hints at the promise of a road you might not have travelled before. Essential classics, both albums.
