Thomas Dybdahl, the Norwegian singer-songwriter, has now made five albums as a soloist – and this self-titled opus works well as a comedown album for the early mornings. Dybdahl writes on the same level as his listener, intimate and conversational, and adds some nice touchers of harmony (‘Adelaide’) and instrumentation (the string touches on ‘That Great October Sound’). ‘Dice’, a touching duet with Silje Salomonsen, suffers only from being too short, while the occasional foray into more powerful production confirms that Dybdahl works best with less backing, able to get his message across. With some elements of folk and country added, this is nonetheless a quietly affecting listen.
