Tobias is reaping rich rewards as he explores a slightly more experimental side of techno, keeping his emphasis firmly on the rhythms but making some really appealing, intricate musical patterns in the process. These patterns concentrate on the darker side, but on tracks like the beatless ‘Entire’, a collaboration with Max Loderbauer that opens the album, it is possible to discern dazzling arrays of colour, shapes dancing before your eyes. At the other end of the scale is the driving ‘Ya Po’, which works up tremendous energy from the second its bass drum appears and gradually opens outwards, Tobias carefully introducing treble elements that reach higher as the track progresses. This grasp of structure and range of frequencies mean the album works really well on headphones, when the scope of its ideas and mastery of its synths really hits home. A lesson in how to stretch out musical material for maximum gain.
