Tycho – ‘Dive’ – (Ghostly International)

Just a quick look at the artwork for this album tells you a lot of what you need to know about its contents. ‘Dive’ is a beautiful piece of ambience, an album whose tracks seem to blend in with each other to wonderful effect, with textures shimmering over soft beats and fulsome bass sounds. There is a bit of cleverness involved too, though, as in the first track ‘A Walk’, where some of the more energetic breaks elements threaten to speed the music up before it returns to slow, balmy climbs once again. ‘Ascension’ creates the image of a blue hue the like of which James Cameron might have used in ‘Avatar’, while the title track is richly colourful towards the end. With a lot of intricate things going on under the atmospherics, there is a lot more to this album musically than you might think – and I can pretty much guarantee you’ll enjoy finding out.
