Stones Throw is ten years old, and principal player Peanut Butter Wolf here oversees an album of new tracks from label staples MF Doom, Madlib and Quasimoto amongst others, paired with a live DVD. The tracks are incisive and cover a multitude of bases, whether in Madlib’s encounter with a pesky saxophone ‘Take It Back’, soothing grooves from Koushik and Georgia Anne Muldrow or rolling beats from J Rocc. Dudley Perkins, meanwhile, takes the bassline honours with a loping ‘Whassup World’, one of many occasions where the strong lyrical content keeps the rhymes on the edge. Sharply defined hip hop that goes with a swing.
