BREAKDANCE/THE ECHOBOX
MANTRA BREAKS

It’s good to see the mighty Cocoon expanding out of its marvellous compilations and shooting artist albums out of its cavernous blowhole. Following Guy Gerber’s highly-successful venture comes Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan, aka Pig & Dan. Throughout this decade they’ve been releasing ever-improving singles on their Submission and Sonic Society labels, last year causing a stir with ‘On To The Beat’ and ‘After Ibiza’ marking their hooking up with Cocoon. Now this fruitful relationship with consummated with their debut album, packed with minimal killers and floor-detonating liftoffs. They have this way of making sounds seem to beam in from nowhere, faint at first then swelling like a slo-mo donkey’s stiffie into full-blown euphoric mayhem. Tracks like ‘Sweet September’ with its masturbating stick insects playing the ‘French Kiss’ riff and melodic acid of ‘Globetrotter’ are as good as it gets in the early hours lost-in-music stakes, although they’re capable of injecting a more eerie feel on outings like ‘Imagine’. Another pupae-scooper from Cocoon!
