Chromeo

The Montreal duo’s contribution to the esteemed DJ-Kicks series come up with a marvellous variation on the mix album by eschewing the obscurely exotic [and expensive] for ‘dollar bin records’ or, in some languages, ‘charity shop specials’. So you’ll find names like France Joli, Alan Parsons, even little squeaker Leo Sayer, all sounding fine once the context is established with the Moroderesque space-disco of Kano’s ‘Ikeya-Seki’ and sublime 80s electronic pop of Donna Allen’s ‘Serious’. Cheri’s ‘Murphy’s Law’ chimes in with its singing rabbits and Chromeo themselves even feel comfy dropping a slice of AOR cheese with ‘I Can’t Tell You Why’. Guilty pleasures all round!
