Speaking as someone who’s always loathed and avoided boxes in music, I have to hold my hand up when it comes to this thing called minimal – only because it’s been such an easy tag to pin on a very recognisable sound. Also when a series of records come along over a long period which make up some of the most exciting electronic music to be heard since the Detroit explosion of Frankfurt’s ’92 peak it needs a name like acid house, or techno, if you catch my drift. This stuff is that seismic. It’s also totally delicious and intoxicating when presented like this double CD set mixed by J16. Here you’ll find the obvious forerunners like Cassy, Villalobos, Alex Under, Mike Shannon but also outings from titans like Derrick Carter [to my mind the minimal pioneer], Rekid and Alter Ego’s Afro-tastic ‘Daktari’ in Matt John translation. 28 tracks – too many to list – but all adding up to another of those delirious journeys which right now seem to be gushing like a bull elephant’s bunghole.
