!K7’s long running DJ Kicks series welcomes Henrik Schwarz to its mixing desk, and, if you’ve found yourself becoming a bit jaded with mix-by-numbers compilations, Schwarz could well be the man to re-ignite your love affair for the medium. Opening with the instantly familiar sounds of Moondog’s classic jazz opus “Bird’s Lament” (popularised by Mr Scruff some years back), the mix twists, turns, shimmies and works through so many styles and genres – songs old and new – it barely leaves you with time to catch your breath. Tracks are unobtrusively tweaked here and there to push the journey in a certain direction, allowing the emotion of the music to come through and sweep the listener along. From obscure funk to tech-house via disco, balearica, electro, soul and jazz, this really is what DJ mixes are about. Essential.
