The title, clenched fist logo and ‘Northern Electronic Soul’ tag hark back to an earlier form of dance music based around drug-fuelled all-nighters, but the music on this first compilation from one of techno’s freshest new imprints is a 21st century marvel. Sheffield-based Dust Science is a veritable magnet for top techno talent. Last year, the Black Dog released their comeback album Silenced here and are represented by Vince Watson’s Mayday-style remix of ‘4 3s 555’ and Orlando Voorn’s treatment of ‘Sudden Intake’. Richard H. Kirk pops up with the no-holds-barred assault of ‘Toned’, Fred Gianelli is glisteningly melodic while, from Detroit, Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, Dan Curtin and Sean Deason showcase a prime source. New bloods Carl Taylor, Derailleur and Paula Temple – aka Jaguar Woman – also impress, especially the latter’s dreamlike sensual massage. This label’s rate of growth is frightening and here’s the proof.
