This is another one of those history lessons from Strut, delivered as ever without a hint of pretence. August Darnell and Kid Creole being the same person, this collection pulls together some of Darnell’s work before he created the pseudonym of Kid Creole in 1980, under which he adds the extremely funky ‘Going Places’ and ‘Double On Back’. Top billing inevitably goes to Machine’s ‘There But For The Grace Of God Go I’, but other high points include the bouncy if slightly cheesy ‘On A Day Like Today’ from Gichy Dan’s Beechwood No.9, and ‘Sunshower’ from Dr Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, where Darnell cut his teeth in collaboration with his brother amongst others. Fascinating stuff – and ultimately hugely and enjoyably funky.
