KINGS OF TECHNO
COMPILED BY LAURENT GARNIER & CARL CRAIG
BBE/RAPSTER

Sixth in a series where top DJs get to bust out of the genres in which they made their name. This is a good one. How could it not be as Motor City electronic pioneer Carl Craig locks horns with the mighty Laurent Garnier, who’s still ppresidingover the shockwaves from his recent career rretrospective Intriguingly, Laurent has chosen to present the History Of Detroit, home of the techno he’s played and assimilated into his own sound over the years while Carl opts for a selection drawn from seminal electronic statements from the late 70s-early 90s. Both bust well out of techno. Laurent starts his story with the Stooges’ ‘No Fun’, pproceedinglydeliriously through Aretha, the Temptations, Funkadelic until emerging in the sublime sensuality of Craig’s ‘No More Words’, Jeff Mills’ ‘Utopia’ and the future blueprint of Arpanet. He closes with Dabrye collaborating with Jay Dee on ‘Game Over’. The proper history. Carl starts with Viage’s ‘Frequency’ before taking in names like Yello, Kano, the Art Of Noise and Nitzer Ebb before hitting his techno plateau with the Black Dog’s ‘Virtual’, their offshoot Balil and closing with the timeless beauty of Garnier’s ‘Acid Eiffel’. Now that’s what i call a compilation.
