Marcel Dettman
Berghain 02
Ostgut Ton

From his work experience at Berlin’s legendary Hard Wax record shop through a back catalogue including this respected label and remixes for Ellen Alien and Rekids to the moodily defiant pose on the sleeve, Marcel’s purist techno pedigree cannot be doubted. A resident at the relentless Berghain, he’s got the chops, the knowledge and mates like Samuli Kemppi, Tobias and Shed who contribute exclusive tracks to the project. In this days of download fluff and tippy-toe minimal, a bit of hardline homage to techno’s roots while wrenching it into the 21st century is to be welcomed. Marcel tips his headphones to the old school [How could he not working at the amazing Hard Wax?] with obscurities like Strands’ ‘Zephyr’ from 1996 and further back to Risque Rhythm Team’s ‘The Jacking Zone’ from 1986 Chicago Connection, also including Kevin Saunderson’s classic ‘Just Another Chance’ from 1988. These gems are interwoven with dark stealth missions from names including Deetron, Radio Slave, Clatterbox, Redshape and the mighty Planetary Assault Systems space-shuffling ‘Kat’. Simply everything you could want in a modern techno set.
