Now here’s an exciting proposition: the chameleon-like Colin ‘Mr G’ McBean, formerly of techno overlords The Advent but now recognised as simply a deftly-skilled propagator of ever-innovative electronic dance music thanks to a string of releases on various labels, unleashing his debut solo album on Rekids, who he signed with in 2006. Here he can swing between classic house forms [‘Blessed’ and the heavenly ‘Get On Down’] and lowslung jazzy boogie [‘Firewater’], through ethereal house texturing [‘Dark Town Orchestra’] to spooked, metallic techno [Platonic Solid No. 5′, Lord Have Mercy’]. ‘Space Bassed’ kicks into whooping disco…I could go on but, safe to say, amidst these beautifully-realised creations Mr G always sounds like he’s up to something uniquely personal, which gives the album its essential soul. It might have taken around 20 years to come but this is a truly impressive long-playing debut.
