The acid test for a Bargrooves album is trying it out on a wet October afternoon. If some sort of musical high can still be gained, then you know it’s doing the business, and happily that’s what Ben Sowton in particular manages here. Sowton’s familiar blend of warm, soulful vocals with rolling house beats eases the first disc to an effortless conclusion, with Soulbasics, Mateo and Matos and Soul Central playing starring roles. Richard Earnshaw’s mix is also effective, with his remixes of Central Avenue and Spiritchaser both rewarding. Another solid outing in the Bargrooves colour series.
