It’s clear a lot of work has gone in to this compilation, a pair of mixes that illustrates Loco Dice’s unique take on house. In his own description of the recording process he nails the style – “deep, groovy, chunky and hypnotic” – and embodies this straight away in the creeping bass of Akiko Kiyama’s ‘Hakobi’. As the first mix develops the beats get heavier, tribal rhythms make themselves known and, by the time Kerri Chandler and Damian Schwartz have done their stuff, the sound is rocking. With the second disc Loco Dice wanted to get close to a typical NRK sound, and he opts for a slightly warmer, more vocal approach in the music of Terry Lee Brown Jr, Joseph Malik and 95 North. For fans of a stripped back, percussive approach to house music, Loco Dice is one of the best DJs to call on – and in a dark club, this will really hit the spot. This also comes in an unmixed, DJ-friendly form.
