Various Artists – Dimitri From Paris In The House Of Disco – (Defected)

The two mixes forming this release – ‘Neo Vintage Disco’ and ‘Neo Vintage House’ – show our love of nostalgia in dance music, seen through the eyes of the present day. The risk with this approach is that things become over-familiar, but thankfully Dimitri From Paris has chosen well, including his own remixes of Sister Sledge 9’Lost In Music’ and Diana Ross (‘The Boss’) to bookend a disco mix that also includes gems from Lindstrøm, Todd Terje and Tom Moulton’s remix of The Brand New Heavies’ ‘Sunlight’. The vintage house music bumps the old (Inner City’s ‘Pennies From Heaven’) into the new (Disclosure’s Mary J Blige collaboration ‘F For You’) as well as paying a big tribute to Frankie Knuckles in the inclusion of ‘Your Love’. Knuckles is the dedicatee of the whole compilation in fact, and he would have doubtless approved of its sunshine state and refusal to lapse into over familiarity.
