The DJ Kicks series manages to coax out hidden depths within the spinners of
choice, and so it is with Bookashade. They modestly refute the fact that
they’re DJs – as did Annie in an earlier release in the series – but not
being able to spin tunes to a high level of proficiency doesn’t matter when
your set list and structure are as convincing as this. Particularly
rewarding is their doubling up of tracks – Cerrone’s ‘In The Smoke’ put with
Ben Westbeech’s ‘Hang Around’, and John Carpenter’s ‘Arrival At The Library’
(from ‘Escape To New York’) combined with Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia’s ‘Far
Away’. The varied mix takes in Heaven 17, Aphex Twin and Brigitte Bardot,
with excellent new ‘Shade track ‘Numbers’, Matthew Dear and Richard Hawley
to finish. Great stuff.
