It seems this year’s brand of commercial house has a strong electro flavour to it, something that becomes apparent when you realise how many hits are on this compilation. The Egg’s ‘Walking Away’ (minus David Guetta), Freeform Five vs Mylo, Radio Slave and Kurd Maverick – all tunes we’ve heard a lot of this year. Handy, then, if you’ve not yet picked up a CD with them all on, to invest in Chris Lake’s selection, but better to enjoy the less obvious material he brings. Martijn Ten Velden’s ‘I Wish U Would’ is particularly good, as is a decent remix of Goldfrapp’s ‘Fly Me Away’ and Sebastian Leger’s remake of Don Diablo’s ‘Blow’. The unmixed format is a mixed blessing, as it were – useful for DJs but containing a few redundant minutes if you want things to get moving.
