This is a combination of artist album and DJ mix, as Ricardo Villalobos presents a string of his new productions continuously segued. ‘Groove 1880’
drifts in almost imperceptibly but gradually the mix takes hold as Villalobos supplies more meat to the drum beat and more definition to the bass line. That said his distinctly minimal style runs through strongly rhythmic tracks like ‘M. Bassy’ and ‘Mecker’, until ‘Primer Encuentro Latino-Americano’ sets up a hypnotic chant over a percussive track, ending the self-assembled set on a high. Suitable both for home listening and in a club environment, Villalobos’ fusion of album and compilation is an undoubted success.
