Various Artists – Fabric 73 Mixed By Ben Sims – Fabric

You could never accuse Ben Sims of hanging around. This contribution to the Fabric series races through 44 tracks in the course of not much over an hour, so there’s plenty of work for him to do – and he does it really well, with a keen sense of ebb and flow that gives the mix an essential structure. He’s in to his stride remarkably quickly, with early highlights including Robert Hood’s remix of Gingy & Bordello’s ‘All Day’, Benjamin Damage’s ‘Recursion’ and James Ruskin’s Blueprint remix of Marcel Dettmann’s ‘Corebox’. As the mix progresses so things get faster and more stripped back, but there’s still time for a bit of humour, as Sandrien’s ‘I Left My Girlfriend In A Club’ shows. Ben Sims himself contributes no fewer than nine tracks to this mix, bringing them up at regular intervals, and of these ‘Break Glass’, ‘Something’, ‘Dream State’ and ‘Raw Hide’ make an especially positive impact, before Special Request’s ‘Broken Dreams’ puts things emphatically to bed in a closing minute. These are no nonsense beats that cut straight to the chase!
