Regular fondlers of these columns will have already heard regular salivating of the tackle which the esteemed Soul Jazz have been unleashing on twelve-inch over the past couple of years. To consolidate, they’ve considerately and conveniently roped together said singles on two CDs which also ram home the genre-straddling and truly pioneering nature of these releases. The one which set the ball rolling in delicious old skool fashion was Capracara’s 303-chomping ‘Opal Rush’, then hotly pursued by other-wordly excursions from JBP, Sutekh, Kode 9 and Matt Radio Slave trading as Rekid, who introduced a creeping hallucinogenic luminescence into deep techno. Ground continued to be broken by electro-kraut tech-warriors Subway before the future-skank dub-step of Digital Mystikz and Skream. Jus to remind where it started, ESG are here with the stark minimalism of ‘Insane’. Not only a superlative set but the shape of things to come.
