Various Artists – Studio One Dancehall – (Soul Jazz)

A simply wonderful collection of dancehall records that implores you to throw the windows wide open. The compilation spans Studio One’s dancehall period, including a number of rare singles that have been thoughtfully compiled, as they always seem to be by Soul Jazz. Ernest Wilson bookends the set, kicking off with the brassy ‘Why Oh Why’ and ending with the slightly sorrowful ‘Pick Them Up’. In between, the ‘Haunted House’ of Windel Haye has a delicious touch of the macabre and the Brentford Disco Set’s ‘Rebel Disco’ is an easy winner, but arguably best of all is Doreen Schaffer’s ‘I Don’t Know Why’, beautifully sung. In truth though there’s not a dud amongst these eighteen songs, which truly hit the summer spot.
