This was always going to be an intriguing combination of musical approaches and styles, with indie and electronic musicians showing what the music of Congolese artists such as Konono no.1 and Kasai Allstars means to them. The homage begins with the loping rhythms of Deerhoof’s take on ‘Travels Broaden The Mind’, a pleasingly woozy number with which to start, but if you contrast that with the bass drone of Shackleton’s ‘Masikulu Rhythm’, or the scattered drums of Bass Clef’s ‘The Incident of Mbuji Mayi’, you see just how much variety and musical scope there is on offer over the course of two discs. An intriguing culture clash, borne of love, that works very well.
