It’s hard to believe that the Y4K series on Distinctive has reached its 20th
release, but time flies in dance music I guess! The imprint has been an
important meeting point for house and breakbeat, and over its twenty
instalments has featured artists of the calibre of Annie Nightingale, Ils,
Hybrid, Phil K and Soul Of Man. This collection blends a few established
Distinctive biggies with new tracks such as JDS’ ‘Purple Freak’ and Black
Daniel’s ‘Gimme What You Got’. As if to demonstrate the join between breaks
and house Jody Wisternoff’s ‘Cold Drink, Hot Girl’ is included, as is the
Jerome Sydenham dub of Hybrid’s ‘Just For Today’, closing off the DJ
friendly CD2. A fitting half term report – with hopefully loads more to come
in this excellent series.
