Strut’s history lessons are always valuable, and always put the music first rather than indulge too much in technicalities. This is most definitely the case with this compilation of samba soul, following on from a first ‘Black Rio’ compilation seven years ago. It’s an eye opener for anyone dabbling in this area for the first time, and quite naturally concentrates on the Brazilian party capital for its sources. Highlights include the quick pulse and rapid fire keyboard solo of ‘Our Sound’, by Guimaraes E O Grupo Som Sagrado, the cooler samba sound of Rubinho E Mauro Assumpcao and the big strings Pete Dunaway brings to ‘Supermarket’. With excellent liner notes from the DJ himself, the music gets put in its proper context, paving the way as it did for baile funk. For anyone with an interest in Brazilian music, it’s a must-buy release.
