Regular visitors to the ‘Mezzanine’ will know that it sets about its compilations in a way that introduces you to new music as well as a few classic standards, and the seventh volume of this durable series is no different. The ‘Cafe’ CD does particularly well, offering an extended version of the Visioneers’ ‘Runnin”, Flevans’ breezy and funky ‘The Notion’, plus more seasoned house from Metro Area and Playgroup. The pick, however, is arguably Todd Terje and his remix of Dolle Jolle’s ‘Balearic Incarnation’. The mixed CD2 picks up a slightly more predictable house vein, but nonetheless scores its own points for including Julien Jabre’s ‘War’, Ron Hall and the Muthafunkaz’ ‘The Way You Love Me’ and Frankie Knuckles’ peerless mix of Hercules And Love Affair. Familiar it may be, but you still can’t beat it for a closing track!
