Picking up on the lead of Ricardo Villalobos, Omar S has made his contribution to the Fabric series a cross between a mix compilation and an artist album, drawing everything from his underground FHXE imprint. In doing so he reveals his versatility, bringing in several aspects of Detroit’s musical heritage to his sound. A bit soulful here, strong techno leanings there – this is a mix that grows organically, taking in some funkier bass lines, some cooler, ‘straighter’ techno and a decent vocal track or two. Some of it’s deep, some of it’s challenging and some is purely blissful – but what this compilation doesn’t do is stand still, it grows throughout the mix. Mandatory listening for Detroit students – and an inspiring listen for others.
