GU038: Black Rock Desert Mixed By Carl Cox
Global Underground

Not before time, Carl Cox breaks on to the Global Underground roster with a compilation that isn’t quite what you’d expect. In fact CD1 might even have you checking this is Cox, with its slinky, soulful opening from Tiefschwarz. Mind you, by the time Guy J is in with his burst of electrofunk, ‘Lamur’ appearing in its Henry Saiz mix, the dye is well and truly cast. There are relatively few frills here, but neither is there a bad track, as we move through hugely satisfying material from Fergie, Trevor Rockliffe and Christian Smith. The second mix is out of the blocks quicker, but still keeps within itself a bit, the stand-out moments coming from James Zabiela, Gui Boratto, Umek and Joachim Garraud. Don’t let that fool you though – throughout Cox makes sure a fulsome kick drum, a big bass line or a spacious breakdown is in operation. An extremely solid start to a new decade of house music.
