Too often Ibiza is represented by TV-advertised compilations of the same cheesy anthems recycled every year: ten-year-old boggle-eyed whoopee which does exist but, meanwhile, the next developments in electronic dance music are being refined and road-tested in magnificent infernos like Cocoon, started ten years ago by the mighty Sven Vath. Every year Cocoon releases a compilation of tunes which rocked its punters that season but to mark its first decade the club has engaged two of its favourite DJs to each construct a CD which captures its unique buzz. Dubfire sets the mood with Basic Channel’s 1995 classic ‘Mutism’ before taking off on a seamless controlled explosion of minimal techno with names including Fritz Zander, Tiga, Andrea Olivers and Alessio Mereu, whose At Timo Vincente provides the highlight with its swarming drones and apocalyptic melon-detonating drop. Loco Dice presents a sublime selection of diverse house, from deep to twisted as Levon Vincent’s metallic dub-house rubs shoulders with Jay Haze, Marco Carola and Brothers Vibe, climaxing with Octave One’s immortal Terraforming. We salute Cocoon, wish it happy birthday and fall over, gibbering and masturbating furiously.
